Microbiology Penicillin has been shown in vitro to be effective against Gram-positive aerobic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, most Actinomyces (Corynebacteria) and Erysipelothrix sp. Sensitive Gram-positive aerobic bacteria include most Clostridia. Penicillin has also been shown in vitro to be effective against certain Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) pleuroneumoniae.
